Silicone engagement rings: what they are, who wears one, and what to buy instead of a fake stone
A silicone engagement ring is a placeholder band for the days the real ring should stay in the box. Here is who uses one, what the good ones look like, and what to avoid.
Search for "silicone engagement ring" and you will find two different things. One is a silicone band with a moulded plastic stone glued on top. The other is a plain silicone band that stands in for the engagement ring on the days it should not be on your hand. We make the second kind, and this guide explains why, who buys them and how to get the size right.
The problem an engagement ring has
An engagement ring is usually the most valuable and the most fragile thing a person wears. It has claws, a stone and a soft precious-metal band. None of that belongs in a weight room, a glove, a kitchen, a kennel, a hospital ward, a climbing gym or the sea. So it comes off, and then it lives in a bag, a locker or a pocket, which is how rings get lost.
A silicone band solves the practical half of that. It goes on the same finger, looks like a ring from across the room, costs under twenty pounds, and if it ever catches on something it stretches and tears instead of holding on to the finger. That last part matters more than most people realise; the injury is called ring avulsion and we have written about it plainly.
Why we do not make one with a stone
A moulded "stone" on a silicone band is a hard lump that catches on gloves and hair, defeats the low profile that makes silicone safe, and tends to look like what it is. So the botthms women's ring is a slim, low-profile band, full stop. If you want something that reads as a little more than plain, the teal and turquoise Active colours get noticed; black and white are the quiet options. Patterned Flow rings exist if you want colour on your hand.
Who actually wears one
- Nurses, carers and anyone under a "bare below the elbow" rule. Where a ring is permitted at all, a smooth silicone band has no claws or stone to trap dirt or snag gloves. Follow your own trust's policy.
- People who train. Kettlebells, barbells, rowing handles and climbing holds all damage set rings. See the gym ring guide.
- Chefs, vets, mechanics, gardeners, parents of small children. Anyone whose hands are in water, grease, soil or someone else's mouth.
- Travellers and swimmers. Salt water, sun cream and hotel safes are all hard on a real ring.
- People waiting on a resize, a repair or the ring itself. A silicone band is the obvious placeholder.
Wearing it with the real rings
Many people wear the silicone band alone for work and training, then put the engagement and wedding rings back on afterwards. Some stack the silicone band under or over a metal wedding band on days when the engagement ring is the only one staying home. Silicone is softer than gold, so it will not scratch the metal ring it sits against.
Getting the size right
Silicone fits snug, closer than metal. Measure a ring you already own on our Fit Finder: calibrate the screen with a bank card or a £1 coin, lay the ring on it and read the size. Or wrap a strip of paper around the finger and use the size guide. Between two sizes, take the smaller. If it arrives wrong, swap it for another size within 30 days.
What it costs in the UK
The botthms women's ring is £19.99. A double set is £29.99 and a four-pack £39.99. Order before 3pm Monday to Friday and it leaves our UK warehouse the same day by Royal Mail Tracked 48, or choose next-day delivery at checkout. Unworn rings can be returned within 30 days.
What to avoid
"Rubber" rings. Natural rubber perishes and contains latex, which some people react to. The material you want is silicone; check the listing.
Glued-on stones. They catch, they fall off, and they make the ring less safe.
No size exchange. Sizing silicone first time is a skill. Buy from someone who will swap it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a silicone engagement ring a real engagement ring?
It is whatever the two of you decide. For most people it is the everyday stand-in for the real one, not a replacement for it.
Can I wear it in the shower and the sea?
Yes. Silicone does not absorb water, and chlorine and salt do not bother it. Rinse and dry it like anything else.
Will it irritate my skin?
The ring is medical-grade silicone with no metal in it, so there is no nickel to react to. If you know you react to silicone, this is not the ring for you.
How thin is the women's band?
The women's Active slim band is 5.7 mm wide, against 8.7 mm for the men's ring, with the same rounded edges so it does not catch in gloves.
What size am I?
