Gym wedding ring: what to wear when you lift, and why the metal one should stay home

Should you take your wedding ring off to train? Yes. Here is what to put on instead, how it should fit under a hook grip, and what it costs in the UK.

If you lift, row, climb or play contact sport, you have already had the moment: the bar is loaded, you look at your hand, and you wonder whether the ring should come off. The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that you do not have to train with a bare finger: a silicone gym wedding ring goes on instead, and it costs less than a tub of protein.

Why the metal ring comes off

Three reasons, in order of how often they actually happen.

It gets damaged. A knurled barbell is a file. Gold and platinum are soft metals; after a few months of deadlifts a plain band is scratched flat on one side and a set ring has loose claws.

It gets lost. Chalk, sweat and a finger that shrinks slightly during a hard session are a bad combination. Rings come off in kit bags, on rowing machines and in changing-room showers.

It hurts you. This is rare but serious. If a ring catches on a rack, a pull-up bar or a rope while your body keeps moving, the metal does not give; the finger does. The injury is called ring avulsion and it can cost you the finger. A silicone ring is designed to stretch and tear under that kind of load so the finger is spared. We wrote a plain explanation of ring avulsion if you want the detail.

What a gym ring actually needs to do

A ring you train in has a short job description.

  • Break before you do. Medical-grade silicone tears under a hard pull. Metal, carbon fibre and "tungsten" rings do not.
  • Not pinch under a hook grip or a false grip. That means a low, rounded profile and a sensible width. The botthms men's band is 8.7 mm with rounded edges; the women's Active slim band is 5.7 mm. Chunky 10 mm-plus rings dig in on cleans.
  • Grip the bar, not slide on it. Silicone has a slightly tacky surface that does not slip on knurling the way polished metal does.
  • Survive sweat, chalk and showers. Silicone does not corrode, absorb or smell. Rinse it when you rinse your hands.
  • Weigh nothing. About 3 grams. You stop noticing it quickly.

Fit: go snug, and go down if in doubt

Silicone fits closer than metal because it grips skin. Your fingers also change size through a session: they swell with blood flow, then shrink as you cool down. A ring that is loose at rest will come off during a set.

Measure a ring you already own on our Fit Finder (calibrate your screen with a bank card or a £1 coin, lay the ring on it, read the size), or wrap a strip of paper around the finger and use the size guide. If you are between two sizes, take the smaller one. If it still arrives wrong, swap it for another size within 30 days.

Where it goes after the gym

Plenty of people who buy a ring for training end up wearing it most of the day: to work, in the sea, on the bike, in the kitchen. It is a plain matte band, it looks like a ring from a metre away, and the metal one stays safe in the drawer for dinner. Some people make it their only wedding band. That is a personal decision and nobody at botthms will tell you what your ring should mean.

What it costs in the UK

A botthms men's or women's ring is £19.99. A double set is £29.99 and a four-pack £39.99, which is the sensible buy if you want one in the gym bag and one on your hand. Orders placed before 3pm Monday to Friday leave our UK warehouse the same day by Royal Mail Tracked 48, or choose next-day delivery at checkout.

Three mistakes to avoid

Buying "rubber" rings off a marketplace. Natural rubber perishes and contains latex, which some people react to, and not every listing that says "silicone" is. Check the material and whether the seller offers a size exchange.

Buying your metal size. See above. Silicone fits snug.

Wearing any ring for welding, grinding or near open flame. Silicone handles sweat, showers and hot washing-up water; it is not built for sparks. Take it off, exactly as you would with metal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I deadlift with a silicone ring on?

Yes. It grips the bar and the low profile sits flat under a hook grip. If the bar ever catches it hard enough, the ring tears rather than your finger.

Will it come off during a workout?

Not if it fits. Go snug, and go down between sizes. A ring that is loose at rest will loosen more as your hand cools.

Does it smell after a while?

No. Silicone is non-porous. Rinse it with soap and water when you wash your hands.

Is a silicone ring safe for climbing?

It is a safer choice than metal because it breaks away. Many climbers still take all rings off; that is a personal call. Silicone also will not scratch holds.

What size am I?

Use the Fit Finder or the paper-strip method on the size guide. Between sizes, go down.
